Christmas is Coming!

BrazilianXmasCover-FB-SafeIt sometimes seem strange to record Christmas music in the heat of summer (unless you’re Down Under), but that’s the way it goes if you want a Christmas CD in time for Christmas. I’ve been lucky enough to record two Christmas CD’s for Green Hill Music: Brazilian Christmas and Christmas is Coming, a tribute to A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Brazilian Christmas was recorded with Ritmos Picantes, my Brazilian band, at Wildwood Studio, with Brendan Harkin engineering. I arranged the basics of all the tunes, and Jeff Steinberg perfected them by arranging strings and writing charts. Jeff is simply brilliant and wrote the most beautiful string arrangements ever. I also got to write two original compositions for the CD: “Christmas Day With You” and “Seems Like Christmas in July.” My dear friends Denis Solee, Pete Huttlinger, Dann Sherrill, Roger Spencer, Chris Brown, and special guest George Tidwell are also on the CD, which we recorded in two full days (with overdubs of the strings added later).

I remember being very nervous about that session, mostly because I was insecure about my reading chops. Jeff would write lines that I needed to play or harmonize with Denis or Pete, and that was a challenge for me. But once we got everything together, it was beautiful. And it was so exciting to hear strings added to “Seems Like Christmas in July.”

Since its release in November 2006, Brazilian Christmas has been very popular. I receive emails all the time that say it’s a favorite CD to play throughout the Christmas season. Besides the two original tunes, it includes “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” “The Christmas Song,” “Christmas is Coming,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “Snowfall,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “We Three Kings,” “Christmas Time is Here,” “The Christmas Waltz,” and “What Child is This?”

ChristmasIsComing-FB-SafeIn June of 2011, I recorded Christmas is Coming, my Charlie Brown tribute. For this CD, I got to record with my quartet, which was very fun! My quartet includes Roger Spencer, Chris Brown, and Andy Reiss. Again, Jeff Steinberg was the arranger, and we recorded at Wildwood Studios with Brendan Harkin. Christmas is Coming was released at the end of October 2011. All the tunes are on the original Charlie Brown Christmas album, plus we added a few extras.

Happy Holidays!
